Molybdenite

Molybdenum is a metal element with element symbol: Mo and English name: Molybdenum. The density of molybdenum is 10.2g/cm³, the melting point is 2610℃, and the boiling point is 5560℃. Molybdenum is a silver-white metal, hard and tough, with a high melting point and relatively high thermal conductivity. It does not oxidize with air at room temperature.


Molybdenum metal uses:
1. Steel alloy: Molybdenum is added to steel as an alloying element, which can significantly improve the strength, hardness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance of steel, especially its performance at high temperatures. Therefore, molybdenum-containing steel is widely used in the manufacture of boilers, pressure vessels, bridges, automobile parts, tools, knives and various mechanical parts.
2. Electronics and electrical industry: Molybdenum is used in the electronics industry to manufacture electron tubes, transistors, X-ray tubes, filament holders for light bulbs, contactors and other electronic components.
3. Catalyst: Molybdenum is a component of various catalysts, especially in the petroleum refining process, used to promote desulfurization and denitrification reactions. In addition, it is used in the production process of certain chemicals, such as the production of acrylonitrile.
4. Glass and ceramic industry: Molybdenum compounds are used as colorants and clarifiers in glass and ceramics to help remove bubbles and enhance the quality of glass.
5. Coatings and lubricants: Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is a good solid lubricant used to reduce friction and wear, especially effective under extreme temperature and pressure conditions. It is commonly used in aerospace and the manufacture of high-performance machinery and tools.
6. Medical applications: Since molybdenum-99 is the parent isotope of technetium-99m, which is a commonly used radioactive tracer, molybdenum is very important in the field of nuclear medicine and is used to diagnose a variety of diseases.
7. High temperature furnaces and crucibles: Due to molybdenum’s high melting point and good thermal stability, it is used to manufacture furnaces and crucibles for high temperature applications.
8. Aerospace: Molybdenum and its alloys are used in the aerospace industry to make certain parts of aircraft and spacecraft because of their ability to maintain performance in extreme environments.
9. Super alloys: In some high-performance super alloys, molybdenum is used to improve the alloy's corrosion resistance and mechanical properties at high temperatures.
10. Biological effects: Although the dosage is not large, molybdenum is essential for the growth of plants and the metabolic processes of some animals, so it also has its applications in agriculture.
